Our Story

HowDo?! Yorkshire started life as a cultural magazine for Bradford in 2011. Co-founded by Martyn Johnston and Haigh Simpson, it provided a platform for creative organisations and individuals in Bradford to promote their activities. The magazine quickly grew in reputation and size, and was known for drawing attention to the cities emerging grassroots arts scene at a time when perceptions of Bradford were at an all-time low. In eleven issues the magazine featured a huge number of volunteer writers and featured the work of well-known local artists including Fabric Lenny, Jean Mcewan, The Print Project, and Drew Millward.

When the magazine project ended in 2013, Martyn continued his work to promote the positive things happening Bradford, establishing a co-working studio and a regional print distribution service that would underpin a future relaunch of a city magazine.

In 2014, Carl White joined the HowDo?! team as Distribution Manager, increasing capacity and developing a print distribution service that helped arts and community organisations reach diverse communities and localities throughout West Yorkshire. In 2015, Haigh came back on the scene to launch his own company (Festival Publications) and The Saltaire Review magazine, subsequently launching successful monthly magazines in Bradford, Bingley, and Harrogate. This further established a print distribution service covering community locations across the Yorkshire region.

Our mission is to help arts and community organisations engage diverse communities and build new audiences, encouraging regional cross promotion and creating a greater sense of cultural activity in Yorkshire. In 2016, we welcomed new members to our team including Marketing Manager Jack Lynch and Operations Manager Scarlett Halford, as well as growing distribution and promotions team.
